Forex on Weekends: Where to View Weekend Quotes?

Роман Кравченко
Does forex work on weekends? Where to view weekend quotes? How to earn from currency market quotes on weekends?

Forex continues to operate even on weekends – interbank-level currency exchange operations initiated by market makers keep happening.

Every trading week, currency pair quotes in our terminal freeze on Friday at 23:59:59 and resume movement on Monday at 00:00:01. Trading does not occur on Saturday and Sunday due to the absence of prices, so many traders believe the forex market is closed on weekends. You might be surprised, but they are mistaken. Let’s discuss why it’s important to track weekend quotes.

What Happens to Quotes on Weekends?

Forex continues to work even on weekends – interbank-level currency exchange operations initiated by market makers persist.

Котировки форекс в выходные дни

Over Saturday and Sunday, trading volumes accumulate, and they take effect in the first second of Monday. If there’s a significant imbalance toward buys or sells, Monday’s opening price will differ sharply from Friday’s close, forming a gap.

Why Are Weekend Quotes Needed?

Of course, if your trading strategy involves closing all positions at the end of the trading week, there’s no need to monitor weekend quotes. However, there are several reasons why it’s still worth doing so:

Earn on gaps. Analysis of this data can provide insights into gap formation preconditions and predict its direction.

Build a trading plan. If there’s no imbalance or it’s insignificant in orders, you can perform technical analysis on the traded currency pair, identify nearby support and resistance levels, and create a trading plan for the next week.

Manage open positions. If a trader goes into the weekend with an open trade, monitoring quotes allows planning actions for market open, such as partial or full profit taking, order adjustments, etc.

Where Can You See Currency Pair Quotes on Weekends?

As you know, the most common trading terminals MetaTrader 4 and 5 do not provide forex quote information on weekends. Nevertheless, you can use other simple and convenient quote sources. We’ll share the most common ones:

  • OANDA – market maker with access to a global database. Quote values update every 5 seconds. For ease of use, the entire table is divided into categories: major pairs, pairs with euro, other pairs, metals.
  • QUESTRADE – Canadian broker partnering with Morningstar, Inc. institute. Thanks to this, maximum quote delay is no more than 15 minutes. The table has a convenient filter allowing work with 8 instruments simultaneously.
  • ХЕ – quotes from this company have high reliability as they are collected from 100 different sources. Data on the page updates automatically every 10 seconds. Users can choose a general or special table at their discretion. The first shows info only for popular assets, while the second allows checking any pair.
  • TRADINGCHARTS – this platform has a convenient filter system dividing all assets by categories. Updates happen automatically, but traders can manually refresh data using a special button for faster access.

When Is the Best Time to Check Currency Pair Quotes on Weekends?

On weekends, order inflows and trading volume accumulation typically occur unevenly. To get the most objective picture, it’s best to check weekend quotes on Sunday, 4-6 hours before trading starts.

Now you can easily find online quotes for your needed forex currency pair on weekends, and this information will help you see the trading situation more clearly and make profitable decisions.

The Best Way to Lock Positions: 3 Expert Opinions on Forex Locks

,alignnone size-new-theme-post-size wp-image-233121" src="https://files.fortraders.org/uploads/2017/08/locking-forex-730x379.jpg" alt="Position locking and locks in forex" width="730" height="379" />In order to close a lock, in addition to market analysis and a clear forecast for the currency pair, you need the broker to have suitable conditions for this. For example, some companies do not have the ability to partially close an opposing position, which greatly complicates opening a lock, especially if an equal lock is used.A very common mistake is when a trader opens a locking order of a larger volume than the initial positions in order to reduce losses when the price moves against the initial orders. Such a lock is extremely dangerous: if the price direction changes, the situation will immediately worsen, and losses will grow faster. Also, many traders make a psychological mistake. As soon as any lock trade shows a profit, and there is a possibility that the price will not go further, most traders' nerves fail, and they quickly close the profitable lock position, thereby undermining the structure. When using locking in your trading, you need to know well how to exit it correctly. As market analysis shows, non-retracement (or with minor corrections) price movement in one direction of more than 500 pips occurs only 1-2 times per year. To set a lock at this level, the account drawdown should be no more than 45%, otherwise there will not be enough free funds to open an opposing order. Statistically, the probability of a pullback at this level is several times higher. Therefore, it is better to "sit out" such moments than to set a lock. Of course, you can set a lock without waiting for a non-retracement trend of 500 pips. But in this case, you will constantly be in a suspended state and deal with locks. In most cases, when you are mentally ready to set a lock, the price will be on the verge of a reversal. The expediency of using position locking in Forex is absent. Whatever the situation with the currency pair, the alternative to a lock will always be a stop-loss or simply "sitting out" losses with averaging at important levels.Furthermore, do not forget that if swaps are negative, such a lock will only increase losses, and on some currency pairs, the size is very significant. Yes, one of the swaps may be positive, but even in this case, the size of the negative will be larger, and losses will still increase. The only acceptable option for a reasonable trader to use a lock is to set it not on a losing trade, but on a profitable one. When an open position is generating good profit but a correction is approaching, instead of closing the trade, you can set a lock, thereby fixing the profit. At the moment when the price resumes movement in your favor, the opposing order is closed, and the profit on the previously opened trade continues to grow. It is psychologically much easier to work with such a lock than with a losing one.
