Illustration: Ukrainian Hryvnia: History, Design and Trading FactsHryvnia – Ukraine’s official currency boasts ancient origins, recognition as the world’s most beautiful currency, and two accepted pronunciations. Its ISO 4217 code is UAH, with numeric code 980.

Brief History of the Hryvnia

The hryvnia first appeared during Kievan Rus, serving as a status symbol, unit of weight, and coin. The name derives from a gold neck ornament worn on the ‘scruff of the neck.’ It soon denoted a specific weight of silver, becoming a unit of account. By the Mongol-Tatar invasion, variants like Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Novgorod hryvnias existed. Later, with the ruble’s introduction (equal to half or a quarter of a hryvnia), it fell out of use as money and reverted to a weight measure.

Ukraine revived the hryvnia in the 20th century in two attempts. The 1918 effort was short-lived, but September 2, 1996, marked success. Artist Vasyl Lopata designed the new notes, produced in Canada, replacing karbovantsi and coupons. They feature historical figures against iconic Ukrainian architecture. Notably, production was ordered in 1992, but authorities debated introducing it or adopting Russia’s currency.

Hryvnia Denominations

Initially planned like Soviet notes in 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200 hryvnias, the design shifted to a U.S. model, replacing 3 and 25 with 2 and 20. The 500 hryvnia reserve note entered circulation in 2006.

Current coins include 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 kopiykas and 1 hryvnia. Alternative names considered for small coins were ‘sotyy,’ ‘rezana,’ and ‘shah.’

Hryvnia Maturity and Exchange Rate History

Despite adoption challenges, Ukraine’s currency reform ranked among the world’s most successful. Four months after launch (1 hryvnia exchanged for 100,000 kupon-karbovantsi), cash in circulation grew substantially in real terms. The currency has seen three issues, all still valid.

The hryvnia-dollar rate held at 2:1 for two years, dropping to 5.5 after the 1998 crisis. From April 2005, the National Bank of Ukraine fixed it at 5.05 for three years; by June 2008, it was 4.85. It then floated toward market rates per NBU policy.

By late December 2008 amid the global crisis, it reached 7.87 per U.S. dollar. In 2010, it ranged 7.9-8.0 per dollar and 3.70-3.80 Russian rubles per hryvnia.

Interesting Facts

  • Two pronunciations exist: ‘hryvnia’ (Ukrainian preference) and ‘hryvna.’ Both are etymologically valid, with Ukraine favoring the first and Russian classifiers the second.
  • Designed by Vasyl Lopata with Borys Maksymov, it was named the world’s most beautiful currency by a Swiss International Finance Bank aesthetics commission. Some note Lopata’s self-portrait resemblance on notes.
  • Counterfeiters target it less than euro or dollar, but the 20 hryvnia note is most faked, followed by 10 and 50.

Hryvnia in Global Trading

Like other post-Soviet currencies, the hryvnia sees low Forex trader interest, so Ukrainian political events rarely impact exchange rates significantly.
