What Is a Sell Limit Order?
Sell Limit is a pending order that opens a sell position at a price higher than the current market price. In essence, you place a Sell Limit order when you want to sell at a more favorable (i.e., higher) price than is currently available.
The Sell Limit order is standard in MetaTrader 4. It executes at the Bid price, and Stop Loss and Take Profit levels can be attached to it.
How Does a Sell Limit Order Work?
After analyzing the forex market, a trader may anticipate that an asset’s price will rise to a specific level before reversing downward. To enter a short position precisely at that reversal point, the trader places a Sell Limit order — ensuring the trade opens at a price better than the current market price.
Let’s illustrate this with a practical example. On the H4 timeframe, USD/CHF is in a downtrend. Based on technical analysis, we expect price to correct upward toward the descending trendline resistance at 0.9715, then resume its decline.

USD/CHF is currently trading at 0.9627. We anticipate reversal at 0.9715 — meaning we aim to sell at a more favorable price. At this projected reversal level, we place a Sell Limit order.

The Sell Limit order becomes an active short position as soon as the market price reaches the specified level. This order resides on the broker’s server — no need to keep your trading terminal open for execution.
How to Place a Sell Limit Order in MetaTrader 4
In the MetaTrader 4 trading terminal, both market and pending orders are placed via the Order window — opened by pressing F9 or right-clicking the price chart. In the Order window, select “Pending Order”, then choose “Sell Limit” from the list of pending order types.

Next, set the execution price. After clicking “Place”, the Sell Limit order appears on the chart and in the “Terminal” tab.

A Sell Limit order functions identically to a market order in terms of risk management: it supports Stop Loss and Take Profit levels. To set them, right-click the order in the “Terminal” tab, select “Modify or Delete Order”, and enter your calculated Stop Loss and Take Profit values. You may also set an expiration time for unexecuted orders or adjust the entry price if needed.

In our example: Stop Loss is placed above the previous swing high (0.9770), Take Profit near the trendline support (0.95700), and the order expires automatically at 23:00 on 09.10.2015.

What Is the Difference Between Sell Limit and Sell Stop?
- Sell Limit: Opens a short position at a price above the current market price — used at potential reversal points after an upward move. Entry is always at a better (higher) price than now.
- Sell Stop: Opens a short position at a price below the current market price — triggered when price breaks down through a level and continues falling. Entry is always at a worse (lower) price than now.
Sell Limit orders are commonly used in range-bound markets (bounce off resistance), downtrends (short at resistance), and corrective phases within uptrends. MT4 prevents accidental misuse: attempting to place a Sell Limit below the current price triggers an error message.
