Overbought and Oversold: A Trader’s Trap

Forex Articles
How to interpret overbought and oversold on oscillators? Is it worth trusting oscillator readings for trading?

Traders often hear that a particular asset or market is overpriced or underpriced, overbought or oversold. These concepts become anchors for traders, shaping their decisions based on what they’ve read in books.

Overbought and Oversold

These anchors are nothing more than personal opinions of the trader and have no real-world basis.

This is because there are other terms like cheaper or more expensive. Nothing stops the market from staying in such a state for as long as it wants.

If the market enters a state of ‘cheaper/more expensive’ within the overbought/oversold zones, the trader will constantly be caught off guard, losing money as prices move up and down. The trader may wonder in surprise, ‘How much longer can this go on? This shouldn’t happen.’

Anything is possible in the market. It’s important to understand this clearly. Stop thinking in categories and simply adapt to price movements while following the rules. That’s all a trader needs to do.

There is also non-traditional use of oscillators. This involves taking trades in the direction of overbought/oversold zones rather than against them, as commonly taught. In this case, the oscillator becomes a trend indicator.

If there are two interpretations of how to trade with oscillators, is there any point in using them as overbought/oversold indicators? The answer is obvious.
